Deliver on Your Promises

Great stories begin with a promise: to the reader and yourself. A great writer delivers on that agreement through narrative tension, taut language, purposeful dialogue, select details of setting and character, and, above all, a satisfying completion of the story. In this two-part online masterclass in fiction writing, we’ll dive deep into how to create publishable fiction as well as how to fulfill the promise to yourself: to be a good writer. We’ll explore what to write and how to get started, as well as how to keep going and finish despite the obstacles life and the creative process will throw at you. In the week between classes, you’ll finish your short story or book chapter, and then, in the second class, we’ll discuss ways to increase narrative tension, which is the life’s blood of great fiction, and to bolster your prose style. The goal is to establish what you offer as a writer and determine how to fulfill the pact with yourself and the reader.

Presented in collaboration with the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick.
